  • Wrapping up my 2024 with Trino

What happened? Did another year really just whizz past me? I am still typing 2024 dates, but it is true. 2025 is here, and soon we will also switch to the new lunar year, so it is time to look back and recapture my year with Trino and Commander Bun Bun.

In a nutshell, my 2024 was a very good year for Trino, Commander Bun Bun, and the Trino contributor and user community. Check out my recap blog post for the Trino project itself for some overall stats and information, and then let’s see what I got done.

  • Meeting old and new friends in Seattle

Manfred at Open Source Summit NA 2023

Wow, has it really been a year that I went to Open Source Summit NA in Vancouver? Turns out this year the event is again close to me, and across the water from Victoria, BC. With that in mind I will take the opportunity to meet many old and new friends from the open source community again at the Open Source Summit NA 2024 in Seattle.

The summit is always an aggregation of many communities with an open source focus and extending into different topics. The range of these is truly impressive, and spans topics for everyone. I will dip into all the communities I have been involved in over the years including security and software supply chain, OSPOs and open source leadership, big data and AI, cloud, CD/DevOps and others. Mainly I will be there representing Trino and Starburst and connect to users in hallway chats. If you want to meet, just contact me.

On Thursday, after all the action of the summit, I will hop on over to the Data Engineer Things meetup and present a Big Data Whirlwind Tour, with a Trino and personal experience perspective. I will bring some copies of my book Trino: The Definitive Guide and be available for question before, during, and after the meeting. Really looking forward to it.

  • Impressions from DevOpsDays Vancouver 2016

Interested crowd at DevOpsDays VancouverDevOpsDays are always a great event for a geek to attend. You get to chat to fellow hackers and coders and therefore people, who actually understand what you are talking about. The vibe that results from these conversations is always amazing. Presenting is definitely a challenge, but great if you can pull it off. Let’s see how I fared at DevOpsDays Vancouver 2016.

  • Ask Your Expert Peers

As part of presenting the last couple of AnDevCon conferences I have organized and hosted so called fireside chat sessions named. They are following the concept used at the Google IO conference, where a panel of topic experts is available in an open questions and answers session. Having evolved this a bit we are now introducing these sessions at our VIJUG meetings and call them Ask Your Expert Peers. So how does it work and what is the intention?

  • A fantastic opportunity to learn Git

Sometimes it takes planning and persistence for things to come together, but then when it happens you end up with great opportunities. An awesome example is the Git and GitHub workshop that is going to happen in Victoria, BC on the 29th of August 2012. The well known speaker, author, trainer and VP of Training at GitHub Matthew McCullough is coming to town to present at a joint event of the Vancouver Island Java User Group VIJUG and the Google Developer Group Victoria BC on the 30th of August. For those interested in more than just a short presentation we are hosting a full day training course of incredible value to anybody from Git beginner to long-time GitHub user.

In the interest of being able to organize a correctly sized venue and to ensure that we do not have to turn you away I would ask you all to find out more about the event on the registration page and book as soon as possible.

As the local organizer and contact person, feel free to contact me for more detail. Especially also if you are interested in sponsoring the event venue or attendee lunch/coffee!

I look forward to hear from you and see you there
